Mitigating air pollution health risks
Project Brief
Air pollution is a major contributor to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Communities unknowingly generate air pollutants through their daily activities, lack air quality data despite noticing changes in the quality of air and are unaware of the catastrophic effects of air pollution on their health and well-being. The project aims to empower vulnerable communities through an air pollution self-triage and educational tool that integrates air quality data, symptoms and social vulnerability risk factors.
Research
A research study is currently underway to assess knowledge, attitudes and practices
(KAPs) towards particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution and its perceived health effects among
residents of Embakasi Sub-County, Nairobi, Kenya.

Project brief
Fragmentation of digital health tools results in inefficiencies in primary healthcare service delivery. The goal of the project was to integrate treatment referrals issued by CHWs in the community into existing health information systesms to extend the reach of high quality diagnostic technologies at the community level.
Research findings
Referral pathways challenges:
● Inadequate communication among health workers ● Inefficient systems ● Lack of referral tools ● Loss of referral documents ● Self reported information lacks objective verification ● Patient experiences; long queues, mistrust
Design Challenge
How might we leverage technology to
close the loop for existing referrals?
Solution
Co-created a tool that supports the digitization of community referrals and recommendations from CHWs and health facility staff respectively
Impact
- Digital health intervention enforced referrals management and escalation protocols (refer within 72 hours)
- Patients received more visits of upto 6 visits within the pilot implementation (P<0.05)
- Improved communication among all parties
